Standardizing Necropsy and Tissue Processing for Histopathological Analysis in Common Marmosets

In our study published in STAR Protocols, we established a standardized protocol for necropsy and tissue processing in common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus), an increasingly important non-human primate model in biomedical research. The protocol provides step-by-step guidance for external examination, blood collection, systematic organ removal, fixation, tissue trimming, processing, and embedding for histopathological evaluation.

We also provide detailed anatomical landmarks, tissue orientation guidelines, and standardized sampling procedures to improve consistency and reproducibility across studies. By minimizing postmortem artifacts and variability in tissue collection and preparation, this protocol enables researchers to obtain high-quality histological specimens and provides a practical reference for preclinical, infectious disease, neurodegenerative, and developmental or reproductive toxicity studies using common marmosets.
